Norfolk
Human Services
It is often the case that the true heroes of our society are invisible
to most of us. Usually it’s the people who quietly go about creating
a safety net for the most vulnerable in our society; Seniors, children
born into unstable homes, adults motivated to work but unskilled and
families who are homeless.
Norfolk
Human Services’ army of Social Workers serves thousands of people
every year and the video we produced for that extraordinary organization
removes the mask of invisibility with these very human stories.
I
got a chance to reunite with a great photographer, Mark Agee who
was my collegue at Metro back in the early 1990s. Jason Parks handled
sound and lighting for the project and all three of us were truly
moved by the experience of working with these fine people.
Norfolk
Human Services’ Jan Callaghan guided us through the process in her role as Director of Communications for Norfolk Human Services. During the process we came to the realization that Jan’s
father was the photographer for my parents wedding way back in 1952.
Bon
Secours-Vignettes
IN 2007 the EAF team got the opportunity to work
extensively with Bon Secours Hospital System; producing videos for
St. Mary’s, Bon Secours HealthSource and St. Francis.
This
video series showcases how Bon Secours has established itself as
a tremendous place for it’s employees to work. Following the moral
directives established in 1824 by the Sisters of Bon Secours in Paris,
Bon Secours invests deeply in its employees and in the process continues
to be recognized as one of the top places to work in the nation.
Flexible
schedules, support for working mothers, and promotion of a healthy
workplace are among the reasons why Bon Secours has succeeded in
becoming a great resource for good help for those in need.
Shot
by both Alfred Shapiro and Mark Agee with sound recorded by Jeff
McGall, the video was produced by Free Agents Marketing account executives
Melissa Jones and Pryor Green. The team worked to help communicate
these important messages to associates throughout the Bon Secours
Health System.
The
Clocktower at Commonwealth Center
The EAF team traveled to Martinsville
in beautiful Southwest Virginia just as the leaves were turning so
we could record the transformation of a community that has been hit
by devastating economic times.
Martinsville
was forced to go through this transformation when the major textile
plant closed in the 1980s and the center of high employment and prosperity
became nothing more than a shell. But lifetime Martinsville resident
and developer George Lester bought the building and invested millions
into turning it into a 21st century high tech home for businesses.
The video we produced is designed to show companies that Martinsville
is a great community to set up shop and the Clocktower at Commonwealth
center, the former factory turned into an office community, is the
centerpiece of the city’s transformation.
Dave
Park shot the video in Film Look while Jeff McGall handled sound
and lighting duties. ShaveFX produced the 3-D animation segments
for this project.
Doug Walsh of Lester Properties and John Jay Schwartz, owner of Have
a Site Will Travel produced the video. Eric wrote, directed and edited
the video while also producing 2-D animated titles in AfterFX.
NOVEC
We got a chance to work with a new client, Northern Virginia Electrical
Cooperative to produce this nifty little spot designed to get electrical
customers to find ways to save energy in their own homes. Bob Morrison
of CMT Advertising provided the copywriting and storyboard while
Dave Park shot the spot in FilmLook with a Cini-Lens Adapter. Dave
and Jason Park did a beautiful job of lighting the spot.
This
project gave me the opportunity to direct a wonderful young actress
named Jordon Benderoth of Virginia Beach. Jordon is a future star;
full of personality and smarts. Her father Rich plays the role of
doting father.
EAF
edited the spots as well. They aired in the northern Virginia, Washington,
DC and southern Maryland area.
Firehouse
Theater
For 15 years the Firehouse Theater in Richmond, located in
an old Firehouse constructed almost 100 years ago has entertained
Richmond audiences with original, modern plays, performed with the
finest actors in the region. As we set about to produce an anniversary
video I decided that instead of producing a typical history piece
that we should instead talk with the actors who have performed there
over the years about what is so special about that theater.
The
result is a wonderful portrait of the true nature of local theater.
VCU
Wilder School of Government & Public Affairs Awards
For the second straight year EAF produced the videos for the Awards
ceremony given by the Wilder School, honoring good government in Virginia.
It was a fascinating to see how well government can work when the right
people look to truly serve the needs of the Commonwealth.
Meanwhile
the Wilder School is regularly graduating our future government leaders
with a vast array of degrees and courses taught by some of the brightest
and most well regarded government experts in Virginia.
WHRO
Pioneer Awards-ACCESS College Foundation
I have been fortunate to
have two documentaries aired on WHRO in my hometown of Norfolk, a
special city where much of my family still resides.
So
when they asked me to produce a video honoring an organization that
has helped more than 60,000 young people find a path to college where
one did not previously exist over the last twenty years I jumped
at the chance.
ACCESS
College Foundation helps students from grades 9 through 12 with everything
from college applications to searches for grants and loans. They
have helped students find more than $175,000,000 in funding for college
and more importantly helped thousands of these young people become
the first in their families to go to college, changing the dynamic
of their futures for generations.
